Privacy Policy
Last updated October 21, 2026
Draft. This document hasn't been reviewed by a lawyer yet and may change before Deckmates launches publicly.
This policy explains what information Deckmates collects, how we use it, who can see it, and the choices you have. We collect only what we need to help you find and organize fishing trips, and we don't sell your personal information.
1. What we collect
What you give us.
- Account details: your name, email address, and password (stored only as a one-way hash we can't read).
- Profile details: your birthday, home city and state, experience level, favorite styles and species, bio, and profile picture, if you add them.
- Trips: the trips you post or join, including meeting places, dates, prices, photos, and requests to join.
- Messages and reviews: what you write in trip crew chats and the reviews you leave.
- Reports: anything you report to us, and the reason you give.
- Messages to us: anything you send when you contact support.
What we collect automatically.
- A sign-in cookie that keeps you logged in. We don't use advertising or cross-site tracking cookies.
- Basic technical information sent with every web request, such as your IP address, browser type, and the pages you request. Our servers use it to keep the Service running and to limit abuse like repeated failed sign-ins.
- The places you search for when looking for trips near you. We don't track your device's precise location.
When you upload a photo, we re-save it in a standard format, which removes hidden data such as the camera's GPS location.
2. How we use it
- To run the Service: create your account, show trips, match you with trips near you, handle join requests, and deliver crew messages.
- To send the emails the Service needs: confirming your email, resetting your password, and trip updates such as join requests, approvals, cancellations, and changes. You can turn trip emails off at any time.
- To keep the community safe: review reports, prevent fraud and abuse, and enforce our Terms.
- To calculate your age from your birthday, so we can confirm you're 18 or older and show trips' preferred age ranges. We don't show your birthday to anyone.
- To fix problems and improve the Service.
- To meet our legal obligations and protect our rights.
4. Your choices and rights
- See and fix your information any time in your settings.
- Download your data. Settings has a “Download my data” button that gives you a copy of everything we store about you.
- Delete your account. You can delete your account from settings. We delete your profile, photos, messages, reviews, notifications, and saved trips, and replace your name and email with placeholders. We keep the bare record of past trips other people took part in, without anything that identifies you, so their trip history still makes sense.
- Stop trip emails from your settings or with the unsubscribe link in any trip email. We'll still send emails you need for your account, such as password resets.
Depending on where you live (for example, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Virginia, and other U.S. states), you may have rights to know what personal information we have about you, to get a copy, to correct it, to delete it, and to opt out of its sale or use for targeted advertising (which we don't do). You can use these rights with the tools above or by emailing privacy@deckmates.app. We'll need to confirm it's you, and we won't treat you differently for using your rights. You can also have an authorized agent contact us for you. If we deny your request, you can appeal by replying to our decision.
We honor Global Privacy Control signals as a request to opt out of sale and sharing, though we don't sell or share personal information to begin with.
5. How long we keep it
We keep your information for as long as your account is open. When you delete your account, we delete or anonymize your information right away, except for anything we need to keep to comply with the law, resolve disputes, prevent fraud or abuse (for example, a record that an account was blocked), or enforce our Terms. Copies in backups are deleted on our normal backup schedule, usually within 30 days. Email links for confirming your address or resetting your password expire within a day.
6. Security
We protect your information with measures such as encrypted connections, hashed passwords, signed sign-in cookies, and limits on repeated sign-in attempts. No system is perfectly secure, so we can't guarantee your information will never be accessed without permission. If we learn of a breach that affects you, we'll tell you as the law requires.
7. Children
Deckmates is only for people 18 and older. We don't knowingly collect information from anyone under 18. If you believe a minor has created an account, email privacy@deckmates.app and we'll delete it.
8. Where your data is stored
Deckmates is run from the United States, and your information is stored and processed in the United States. The Service is intended for people in the United States.
9. Changes to this policy
We'll update this policy as the Service changes, and we'll change the date at the top when we do. If we make a material change to how we use or share your information, we'll tell you by email or on the Service before it takes effect.
